The National Council for the Social Studies and the Florida Council for the Social Studies established an academic honor society for high school juniors and seniors. Such students must demonstrate excellent academic performance in the discipline, provide service toward their school or community, and exhibit the attributes of leadership and good citizenship. The mission and the purposes of this organization shall be:
to promote scholarship and to recognize academic excellence in social studies among high school students.
to provide through its local chapters opportunities for exploration in the social studies in secondary school environments and the community.
to encourage interest in, understanding of, and appreciation for the social studies
To be eligible, students who are a Junior or Senior in high school, must maintain a minimum 3.0 unweighted G.P.A. in their social studies classes and must have (or be able to earn) at least four credits in the discipline upon graduation. Many chapters also ask for teacher recommendations and will follow county and school level procedures in maintaining their membership requirements.
